Sparking Change Retreats

Men's Wellness Retreat on the Southern California Coast

A Sparking Change retreat on the Southern California coast is a few days in a private home near the ocean with 8 to 12 men, built around sleep, stress, recovery and the question of what you actually want your life to look like. You leave with a plan and a follow-up schedule, not a souvenir.

Why the coast

The Pacific does half the work. Mornings start with movement and breathwork near the water, and the afternoon outdoor challenge is often a surf session or a coastal hike. Cold water is right there, which makes the recovery work feel less like a protocol and more like part of the day. For men who live in Southern California, it's also close enough that getting there doesn't eat into the reset.

What the days look like

Every Sparking Change retreat runs on the same framework as the coaching programs, compressed into a few days. A typical day:

  • 7:00 AM Sunrise movement and breathwork
  • 8:00 AM Breakfast and nutrition education with the chef and nutritionist
  • 9:30 AM Workshop: stress science, mindset or nervous system regulation
  • 11:00 AM Sauna and cold plunge with guided recovery
  • 2:00 PM Workshop: goal setting, dopamine reset or performance identity
  • 4:00 PM Outdoor challenge, often a surf session or a coastal hike
  • 6:30 PM Dinner and a community circle
  • 8:00 PM Integration with the mentor team

Morning and night check-ins run the whole time, and there's a guest speaker each day.

Before you arrive and after you leave

Before the retreat, every man completes bloodwork, an intake questionnaire and a call with the team, and a partner physician reviews the labs. After it, you get an integration worksheet within 48 hours, a follow-up call with Joey within a week, and a lab retest with your physician at four to six weeks. If you want to keep going, coaching picks up where the retreat leaves off.

Common questions

How many men are on each retreat?

8 to 12. The group is kept small on purpose so everyone gets direct time with Joey and the team, and no one sits on the sidelines.

Do I need to know how to surf?

Surfing is one option for the afternoon challenge, alongside hiking and mountain biking. Tell the team about your experience and any injuries on your pre-retreat call so the plan fits you.

When is the next retreat?

Book a free call to ask about upcoming dates, apply, or join the waitlist.

Is this therapy or medical care?

No. The retreat is coaching and education, built on Joey's clinical training as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Lab work is reviewed by a partner physician, and anything medical stays with your own doctor.
